Bubba the Cowboy Prince: A Fractured Texas Tale

written by Helen Ketteman
illustrated by James Warhola

1997
Ages: 4-8
Genre(s): Fantasy
Golden Sower

Summary: Bubba lives with his stepdad and lazy, spoiled stepbrothers on a ranch in Texas.  Bubba is made to do all of the work on the ranch while his brothers and step father stand around snapping orders at him.  A wealthy rancher gal has decided to get married and holds a hoe down to help her decide who will be her husband.  I bet you can guess what happens next.

My reaction:  I love this twist on the classic Cinderella story.  Children would also love to see the good guy win in the end.

Activity:  Read the story of Cinderella and then read Bubba the Cowboy Prince.  Have students create a project of their choice to compare and contrast the two.
