Picture Books and Illustration

     There is a difference between picture books and illustrations.  In picture books, the pictures add to the story, maybe an additional story or maybe clues to the story already being told.  The story would not be understood if the pictures were not there.  In illustrations, the pictures may be of a certain scene or person described in the story and are there to add flavor to the story.
     It is very important, when selecting picture books, that a person considers whether the story and illustrations are appropriate for the age group for which they are written.  It is also important that the pictures are relevant to the story and the stories are easily understood.  It is more beneficial if the book holds the interest of the child and the adult reading the book to the child.
     In books for very young children, there are few words, the font is larger and the book is made of much sturdier material.  The size of the books are generally small, designed for little ones to grasp in their hands.  Bright colors are used to attract the attention of the child.  Many times, texture or sounds are added so the child can explore and discover.
