Summary: This is a re-telling of a Turkish folktale. Nasrettin Hoca, a legendary man from Turkey, is a kind and giving man. He cares for everyone he meets. On his way to a banquet to which he has been invited, he takes time to rescue a goat. He does not have time to clean up before the banquet but goes anyway. When he arrives, he is ignored because of his disheveled appearance. Nasrettin leaves to clean up and change clothes. When he returns, he is accepted welcomed profusely. When he is served dinner, he feeds it to his coat, for he feels his coat must have been the one actually invited to the banquet.
My reaction: Learning not to judge others by appearance is very important in life. This story brings it to light in a very clear way. I would share this story with students to help them understand how important it is to see people for who they are.
