Shiloh Season

by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

1996
Age ranges: Grades 3-5
Genre(s): Adventure, Realistic Fiction
Golden Sower

Summary: Ever since Marty made a deal with Judd Travers so Marty could save Judd's dog, Shiloh, from being abused and neglected, Marty has been a little scared of Judd.  Now Judd has taken up drinking again and goes out hunting animals while he is drunk.  Marty is very afraid that Judd will harm Shiloh or one of Marty's sisters.  Marty makes some tough decisions and his father makes him own up to the ones that were wrong.  He is growing up quickly and finding out that things and people are not always as they seem.

My reaction:  I love the way Marty's parents hold Marty to a standard of how to treat others even though the parents obviously do not approve of the way Judd lives.  Marty's dad helps him to see things in a different light, something that is important for each of us to do.
