Martina the Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale

By Carmen Agra Deedy
Illustrated by Michael Austin

2007
Ages: 6-9
Genre(s): Folktale (Traditional)

Summary:  Martina is a beautiful cockroach and she is ready to get married.  Suitors come and try to wind her hand but her grandmother has a special test for her to give each suitor. Martina is to spill coffee on the suitors to see how they act when they become angry.  Using this test, Martina is able to see who will be a good match for her.

My reaction:  This is a sweet little story but it has great meaning.  When someone is considering a relationship, they must be able to see their future suitor in many situations in order to gauge his or her reactions to see their true character.
