Summary: The Great Depression is affecting everyone in America and Mary Alice is not happy when she is sent to live with her grandmother in "Hicksville" for the next year. Although she feels her grandmother is strange and that she herself is an outcast in this small town far away from her home Chicago, Mary Alice's views on it all change as she gets to see everything for how it truly is.
My reaction: This story is a great look at the struggles people experienced in the Great Depression. It is also the story of how getting to know someone can help us to see them for who they really are. Sometimes people seem rough and uncaring until you truly get to know them and get to see them on a new level.
