The Gift of the Crocodile: A Cinderella Story

     Summary: A “Cinderella tale” from Indonesia where the young Damura is tricked into getting her dad to marry a local woman in exchange for a doll. Once the stepmother takes over the affairs of the house, she and her daughter treat Damura like a slave. One day, sweet Damura is at the river and speaks kindly to Grandmother Crocodile. Grandmother finds that Damura wants to go to meet the prince. She dresses her beautifully and Damura wins the prince’s heart. The rest of the tale is a typical cinderella story.

     My reaction: I think it is good to see other countries share the same type of fairytale/traditional tales we learned growing up. The story of Cinderella, going from rags to riches, has inspired dreamers for generations.

     Activity: Share several different “Cinderella stories.” Have children compare and contrast them and then develop their own in whatever way they will enjoy sharing with their class. (ie. digital storytelling, iMovie, ThingLink, Book Creator, Tellagami, etc.)
