Ice to Steam: Changing States of Matter

by Penny Johnson

2008
Ages: 9-12
Genre(s): Informative

Summary: Solids, liquids, gases.  When does one become the other? Where do we get our water?  What causes volcanoes to erupt and what happens to the matter afterwards?  Is sugar a liquid or a solid?  It holds properties of both.  All of these details and many more are discussed in Ice to Steam: Changing States of Matter.

My reaction:  This book is well-written and beautifully illustrated.  The author briefly touches on so many different areas that this book is sure to pique a child's interest for further study.

Activity:  Have students choose one of the topics discussed in the book and research it further.  Have them share with their classmates the changing states of matter effect the object in the topic being discussed.
