Pictures of Hollis Woods

by Patricia Reilly Giff

2004

Age ranges: Grades 5-8
Genre(s):  Realistic Fiction
Newbery Medal

Story summary: Hollis Woods is a foster child that has always dreamed of having a family of her own.  The story jumps back and forth between her time with the Regans, the family she had just begun to feel a part of until she “ruined it,” and her current placement with an older woman.  Through a series of events, Hollis realizes that she really does belong with the Regans and that she finally has a home.

My reaction:  This story of misunderstandings and longing for a real home gives one a little insight into what it may be like for children in the foster care system.  This book could be shared with children in order to help them have more sympathy and possibly understanding for others in situations different from their own.
